How SEO helped me start earning money in the crypto market

When you’ve been studying Google and Yandex algorithms for 15 years, you start to understand the market’s behavior. If someone had told me 5 or 10 years ago that my SEO skills would help me successfully trade cryptocurrencies, I would have laughed. However, life often surprises us.

I’ve dedicated almost half of my conscious life to SEO (I’ve been working on website search engine optimization since 2008). During this time, I’ve learned hundreds of ranking factors and the intricacies of search engine algorithms.

At the same time, my interest in trading grew: first, in classic trading (stocks), and then in cryptocurrencies. Perhaps my economic education played a role. But in general, it’s all thanks to the spirit of a classic webmaster-money maker.

Two years ago, I started actively engaging in crypto trading while continuing my work as an SEO specialist. I discovered that my SEO experience directly benefits my trading. In this post, I want to share what search engine optimization has taught me about cryptocurrency trading and how I manage to combine both activities.

I do not sell trading signals, provide paid training, or offer financial advice. Everything I write about is based on my personal experiences and observations during my transition from SEO to crypto trading. This material is not an investment recommendation and does not encourage trading, especially with the use of futures or leverage.

Remember: the cryptocurrency market is highly volatile, and any decisions you make are at your own risk.

How an SEO guy ended up in the world of candles and levels

It all started with the fact that for several years I studied traditional trading – read books, mastered technical analysis, tried to trade on the stock exchange. But the real challenge for me was cryptocurrency trading.

About two years ago, I became seriously interested in the crypto market (a certain influence here was exerted on me by Rinat Khaisman, who, in his time, almost completely left SEO for crypto). On the one hand, it was a dynamic, volatile, 24/7 market where new opportunities appeared every day. On the other hand, I was still working as an SEO optimizer and had no intention of giving up my favorite job. I had to learn how to balance my time and energy between these two areas.

From the outside, it may seem like SEO and trading are completely different worlds. But as I delved into crypto trading, I felt a sense of déjà vu: the skills I had acquired over the years of working with search algorithms were starting to pay off on the exchange.

And I made my first serious loss precisely because I acted impulsively — like a beginner trying to “catch the train.” I wouldn’t have done that in SEO.

For those who have never traded crypto: The numbers on the screenshots represent percentages of the position. For example, minus 130% of $100 is a loss of $130. And if the position was not $100, but $100,000, then this is a loss of $130,000.

Where SEO and crypto intersect more than it seems

In SEO, I’m used to thinking structurally and analytically: constantly unraveling algorithms, looking for patterns in data, adapting to changes in search factors. I’ve transferred these approaches to trading. Here are the key lessons from SEO that help me in the crypto market:

  • Data analysis and pattern recognition. Search engine optimization has taught me to dig into data sets, from keyword positions to behavioral metrics. This skill is invaluable in trading, where I closely examine price charts, volumes, and indicators to identify recurring patterns. For example, just as an SEO specialist tracks the signs of Google’s algorithm, a trader looks for typical price movements that indicate the actions of trading bots or large players.
  • Understanding algorithms and the work of bots. Years of studying search algorithms (Google, Yandex, etc.) have taught me to think like a machine: to look for algorithmic triggers. In SEO, we know that Google has hundreds of ranking factors, and we need to understand their logic. In crypto trading, it turned out that most of the trades are made automatically by bots – according to some estimates, more than 70% of all trading operations in the crypto market are performed by algorithmic bots (and on OKX, where I trade, it’s more than 80%). Realizing this, I approached the charts like I would Google search: I started looking for “price ranking algorithms.” In other words, I was trying to figure out what rules the trading programs follow. Step by step, I was able to identify patterns on the charts – moments when, under certain conditions, bots buy or sell in large numbers. These insights gave me a huge advantage.
  • Technical analysis and working with levels. When optimizing websites, I’m used to looking for growth points and key factors for success. In trading, I similarly rely on technical analysis: I identify support and resistance levels, monitor indicator signals, and candlestick patterns. You could say that SEO has taught me to see “through the noise” – both in the search results and on the price chart. I focus only on the most significant signals. For example, just as an SEO specialist doesn’t react to every minor position fluctuation, the trader in me doesn’t panic over every candlestick. Instead, I wait for the price to approach a strong level or form a clear pattern before taking action.
  • Automation and tools. In SEO, many processesI use tools to manage my work: collecting semantics, auditing my website, and tracking my positions – all of which can be automated. I’ve also applied this approach to trading. I’ve set up automated market analysis for myself, where specialized bots and scripts monitor the trading pairs I’ve selected and provide signals when the conditions are right to enter a trade. This minimizes my involvement, as the routine analysis is handled by the machine. All I have to do is evaluate the signal and make a decision. In fact, trading now takes no more than an hour a day, and I don’t miss out on important market movements.
  • Discipline and strategy over time. SEO teaches patience: it takes months of work, experimentation, and waiting to bring a website to the top. The same applies to trading – instant profits are rare, and success comes to those who are patient and disciplined. I strictly follow my developed strategy, just as I once followed a website promotion plan. There are clear rules: when to enter, when to take profit, where to set a stop loss. I try to exclude emotions: this is also helped me by SEO, where impulsive decisions often harm. Trading has become almost an algorithmic process for me, like optimization for a search engine – there is a goal, there are metrics, there is a sequence of actions.
  • Distrust of bloggers. Practice shows that “everyone lies”. In SEO, bloggers like to embellish their successes. And there’s so much lies in crypto that it’s easier not to read or watch influencers from this niche at all (there will be a separate post about this). So for the first year, I just used my own money to test all the “theory” that’s flooded YouTube (and spent about $1000 on it).

All these skills helped me achieve good results in trading. After finding my “algorithms” in the market, I took my trading to a new level: now, approximately 9 out of 10 trades are profitable for me. Of course, there are still some losing trades, but thanks to my systematic approach, they are minimal. This is largely due to the principles I learned from SEO: analyzing, automating, and constantly learning from feedback.

As you can see from the screenshot from the OKX exchange personal account, over the past six months, my capital gain has been +54% (blue line), surpassing Bitcoin, which has a yield of +33% over the same period (orange line). At the moment, I don’t know of any source that can provide me with a higher return with comparable risks.

This is even considering yesterday’s market correction, which was linked to Trump’s announcement of a 100% tariff on China. If we were to engage in “cherry picking” and take the peak (early October), we could write “+78%.”

Therefore, I periodically distribute money to my subscribers on my Telegram channel (examples: one, two, three). As long as there is such an opportunity.

Balance of two worlds: “SEO – for the soul, trading – for profit”

Despite the success in crypto trading, I do not intend to leave SEO. Search engine optimization is a matter for the soul, my long-standing passion. I like to solve Google algorithms, help websites grow and see the results of my work in the form of high positions and traffic. SEO is not just a job, it is part of my lifestyle and my way of thinking.

Cryptotrading is more of a practical hobby for me. Yes, it generates income, and it’s great to see the positive balance on my account. However, I only spend an hour a day trading, and I view it as a way to earn extra money and apply my analytical skills.

Thanks to the almost complete automation of analysis, I don’t have to spend days in front of the screen. All I need to do is open a position at the right time and set up a take-profit and stop-loss according to a predetermined scenario. The rest of the day, I’m immersed in SEO projects, reading industry-specific news, and experimenting with websites.

Combining SEO and trading has proven to be a feasible and complementary approach in my life. SEO fuels my curiosity and structured thinking, while trading provides the excitement and financial rewards of this intellectual endeavor.

Sometimes, I find myself thinking that website optimization and price chart analysis are processes that share similarities. What’s there is to figure out how the algorithm’s “black box” works and make the right decisions based on incomplete information.

Instead of conclusion

My transition from SEO to crypto trading was not a change of profession at all, but an expansion of horizons. I am still an SEO specialist – this is my favorite thing and my main expertise. It’s just that now the knowledge about search algorithms helped me to tame also the market algorithms. The experience from SEO became the missing piece of the puzzle that turned into a successful trading strategy.

If you, while working in one sphere, suddenly feel interested in another – go for it. You never know what skills will suddenly “shoot” in a new field. In my case, the analytical mindset of an SEO optimizer turned crypto trading into a predictable and systematic occupation.

At the same time, I remain loyal to my work in search engine optimization, and I am glad that my hobby of trading does not interfere with my professional growth, but rather contributes to it. After all, both SEO and trading are about the ability to see patterns and stay one step ahead of algorithms. These skills are essential in any profession.
